New Zealand Birds Until the last century, there were no predators in New Zealand, so the bird life flourished. When man came along, with his rats/cats/opossum etc - the birdlife has suffered greatly. Many now extinct including the worlds largest Eagle, and the Moa - one of the largest birds to exist. The Department of Conservation is trying to un-infest the small islands off the mainland, to give some of the near extinct birds a surviving chance. The kiwi is the national bird of NZ. And all NZers are called kiwis.
